I cannot say...
... that I'm unhappy that al-Zarqawi is dead. He was a vicious man who personally beheaded people. But I also read that a woman and child were killed in the airstrike. That, especially the child, deeply saddens me. Along with al-Zarqawi's martyrdom in the eyes of his people, the death of a child will also hold their attention.

It is a hollow victory.

my response to [info]tavalon's 9/11 entry
To All My Fellow Americans Who Voted for George W. Bush:

Just for the record, I voted Libertarian this last election, because of how Bush handled things post-9/11.

Are we safer now than before 9/11?

Absolutely not. In fact, I believe our vulnerability is much more precarious now. I had a lot of faith in him during the early days…. he seemed to be quite capable of uniting the country and getting the job done. But once things really swung into motion, after the emotional connection had faded, he let us down badly.

And on this sacred day of remembrance, do you think we honor or shame those who died on 9/11/01? If we learned nothing and find ourselves today every bit as vulnerable and unprepared as we were on that bright sunny morning, then did the 3,000 die in vain?

I believe the American people as a people still honor them. I believe the Bush administration is giving it lip service. They did not die in vain, as America changed forever that day concerning its awareness of “what’s out there.” However, we have failed to monitor sufficiently the aftermath in terms of our civil liberties. That sense of “WTF?” is growing, but we let our patriotic fervor distract us from the concrete shoes we were being fitted with.

note to the politically rabid
I knew Bush was connected, but I didn't realize he could conjure up a hurricane!! Don't you have something constructive to do? Like donate $$ and other aid to homeless, hungry, dehydrated people? Have the "Reverends" Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton left Cindy's camp yet to lend spiritual relief to the people who really need it? I didn't think so. They can't get closeup shots in the Astrodome.

Oh, yeah, and global warming is called GLOBAL for a reason. And it's been warming up long before January 2001. So if that contributed to Katrina, you've got a long list of violators.

Had to say something; it's starting to spring up on so many forums.

EDIT: Thank you, [info]drgndancer for this input.

"As a local, I'd like to point out that the essential problems are three fold. First, The levee system was designed to withstand a CAT III storm. It could have withstood a CAT III storm, instead it got hit by a strong CAT IV, that had been CAT V just hours before landfall. Essentially, if you build your box to withstand a wood workers claw hammer, it's going to be broken by a 20 pound sledge. It's not George Bush's fault that the systems was designed for a claw hammer.

Second, it has been obvious for years that the system needed to be redesigned to withstand a CAT IV storm. George is not the first president to balk at the expense involved in a total redesign. One _could_ blame him for this, but one would really have to blame every president for the last thirty years along side of him. He just happened to be standing when the music stopped."

a pet peeve of mine
I do not think witchcraft is a religion, and I do not think it is in any way appropriate for the U.S. military to promote it.

I'll say it again on this score. He had an opinion; an unpopular one, but an opinion nontheless. NO LEGISLATION WAS EVER INTRODUCED to take the Wiccan services away or to restrict Wiccan/pagan organizations from continuing in any way. Now, I abhor Bush as a president, but it irritates me no end to hear this quote regurgitated again and again, as it is not linked to ANY legal actions against Wiccans/pagans. It's a pet peeve of mine.
